Growing a Garden in Your Own Backyard

How to Start a Garden

Do you want to be the neighbor that has the garden everyone envies? If you're looking to make your outdoor space aesthetically pleasing, having a garden may be just what you need. Knowing how to start a garden is fairly simple. A well planned garden is something that everyone can take joy in looking at, and really isn't too difficult to do.

Plan Your Design

First you'll want to think about the design of your garden. Will it be something that takes up a lot of space in your yard, or are you looking to just have a small box garden? Thinking about this will give you an idea of the kind of layout you want for the space. For a flower garden, having a mix of short and tall flowers of different sizes will add great depth to the space.

Pick Various Plants

No matter what flowers you chose to have, another great way to add dimension to your garden is by having a variety of colors. You don't have to have every color there is, but a few different varieties will make the space look nice. One idea could be to have a monochromatic garden, so all of the colors are a variation of the same hue. You could also play around with the color scheme by having complimentary colors. For example, purples and oranges would complement one another. Adding color through greenery is another way to add charisma to your garden. For example, zebra grass is a great addition since the two hues and striped pattern add dimension to any space.

Budget it Out

The last thing to consider is the cost. Having a garden can be pricey depending on how much of a wow factor you're looking for. Take into consideration that the expense is going to include a lot more than just the flowers you want to plant. Other costs need to be factored in which include: gardening tools, soil and mulch, borders or brick, pots, and the water needed to keep your garden going once you have everything planted. Some of these costs are not necessary, but still need to be taken into consideration. Depending on your budget, you can scale down on some of these items to make having a garden easier on the wallet.

Having a garden is a great way to relax and release stress. It's something that you can take pride in. Planning a garden can take some time and money, but once completed, you will reap the benefits of having something that is aesthetic and peaceful.
